Gulag Song

from Plus Vite Que La Musique by Vialka

lyrics

A long time ago, far far away
Something happened to us that I remember to this day
It all started when I developed a plan
To go and make some noise in a distant land

So we took a plane and flew to the east
To the land of vodka, we knew that thing at least!
We met up with a band, a debaucherous crew
What would happen next, we didn’t have a clue.

-Chorus:
I tell you this story because it is true
And because I hope it won’t happen to you
Of one tiny village in a far away land
That just so happens to be the name of our band

This debaucherous crew, they were most frugal
Their idea was to travel ‘round not spending a rouble
Without buying a ticket to ride on the trains
Pretending to be deaf and dumb when the controller came

But the controller thought that we were in a cult
So she asked some crazy soldiers to come and kick us out
But you know how we are – too smart for them
We ran down and jumped into the next wagon

-Chorus

They saw us do it and started to chase
Drunken red-eyed soldiers screaming Russian in my face
We were quite sure that they would shoot us on the spot
To let us die in agony and then leave us to rot

But they didn’t kill us, they finally let us go
They threw us off the train and into the snow
In the middle of nowhere, in a place of mystery
In the village of VIALKA, the rest is history

-Chorus
